BLOOD LINES Blood Lines are a quartet from NYC that brings together James Loman and Raquel Vogl who comprised one half of the D.C. based The Cranium (whose other members are in Gang Gang Dance) with the multi-band rhythm team of Allie Alvarado and Busy Gangnes. As a whole they form what is an awe-inspiring outfit that baffled and inspired many an audience in NYC and on their US tour with Gang Gang Dance during their short existence in 2005. We suppose a bit of back-story might be needed: The Cranium hailed out of DC in the 90’s and was comprised of James and Raquel with Brian Degraw and Tim Dewitt of Gang Gang Dance. After one and a half US tours the outfit imploded around the turn of the century eventually depositing all four members in NYC. From there James went on to form the Centuries; a duo which might be described as melding the aesthetics of The Living Theatre and Mars. This outfit saw one release as the inaugural issue on Mark Ibold’s (Pavement) and Jesse from Shrine’s short-lived label. Enter Busy and Allie who were running in different circles. The resulting sound of Blood Lines is like chaos on rails. Tight, controlled and angular while teeming with a dark kinetic energy. Anyone who saw them during their short existence can testify to the intensity that the group brought. These three songs are but a sampling, from their album XX. But just this small slice will keep ringing in your ears the way that a freight train’s sonic rumble presence is felt in your ears long after it has rolled down the rail. |
