I.U.D. This is the fifth release in The Social Registry’s 7-inch series, titled The Social Club, which ran from 2007-08. Dispatched monthly via letter-pressed/limited edition 7-inch vinyl and digital distribution, this series presented a full musical array: the established and the obscured, the noisy and the delicate, the tempered and the experimental. "A cloud of sampled metal and ritual pounding set to emasculate." - Dusted It’s no wonder that Lizzi Bougatsos and Sadie Laska sound great together. Hitting it off the first day of Art school, the two hung out for the first time at Laska’s weed-dealing older brother’s party, and the two have been close ever since. With a background in local Morgantown, West Virginia’s straight-edge hardcore scene, Laska’s musical sensibilities meshed perfectly with those of Long Island native Bougatsos, who had grown up going to shows by the likes of Minor Threat. After a stint living together after college, the two went their separate ways. That’s not the end of the story, though. With her multi-instrumental and vocal work in the celebrated band Gang Gang Dance, Bougatsos found herself eager to focus more on drumming. She rang up Laska and the two set to work. The result - a blend of propulsive drumming and samples from all over the musical (and often non-musical) spectrum - is a visceral and moving experience. Much like Bougatsos’ work in Gang Gang Dance, I.U.D.’s sound is hard to tie down to any specific label or genre. It’s an entirely unique experience that the band describes as “a fucked up mix of Crash Worship and Butthole Surfers. The two tracks presented here, "Goat Pussy" and "FFing," comprise the first recorded material by I.U.D. to see the light of day. Both tracks draw beauty from the caustic, drawing samples from a wide variety of sources and charting new musical territory in the process. It is the root of the project that ties the whole effort together - the duo’s initial interest in drumming, and their deep-rooted musical and personal compatibility. |
