DOUGLAS ARMOUR This is the fourth release in The Social Registry’s 7-inch series, titled The Social Club, which ran from 2007-08. Dispatched monthly via letter-pressed/limited edition 7-inch vinyl and digital distribution, this series presented a full musical array: the established and the obscured, the noisy and the delicate, the tempered and the experimental. ""Prince Of Wands" is a gigantic chunk of unashamed indie-pop and reminds me of the glory days (mid-90s) when you could go out and grab countless 7"s of fuzzy guitar-led pop bliss. The flipside, however, is even better and it's lo-fi in all the right ways. Like Pavement jamming with the Shins and with a crumbly breakbeat that should be obligatory on all records ever. Awesome." - Boomkat Hailing from Los Angeles, California, Douglas Armour is a prolific songwriter who originally started playing in the DC music scene and has been in numerous bands, one of which included Psychic Ills’ Tres Warren (something we had no idea of until the two recently bumped into each other in our office). For this 7-inch Douglas provided us with two tracks, "Prince of Wands" and "Away." "Prince of Wands" first left an impression on us, and an indelible one at that, when associates of the label began DJing the track. It is a damn near perfect pop song that has had people jumping up to the dancefloor upon first hearing. Singing backup vocals is Ashmatic Kitty recording artist Liz Janes. However, "Prince of Wand"s only represents one aspect of this talented songwriter’s sound. "Away" shows him moving in a different direction with the kind of indie pop reverie that hasn’t been heard for a long time. |
