MIKE BONES “Anthemic doesn’t have to mean overblown you know. Mr. Bones can do it with swooning casualness, sieving the twee from Sufjan Stevens and Belle & Sebastian, leaving only heart and soul.” - NME What I Have Left is the advance single from Mike Bones’ second album A Fool For Everyone. It is both a somber personal lament and epic musical triumph. Train-like guitars chug along with swelling dynamics while strings melodically hum over the proceedings. The rhythms are reminiscent of punk rock motifs, yet the orchestration on top lends a certain sort of heart-wrenching splendor that won’t be easily forgotten. Backing vocals from label-mate Douglas Armour sprinkle the track with an extra layer of pop. The Sian Alice Group remix keeps it in the family (they guest on the original and all over A Fool For Everyone). This version maintains the beauty of the original, yet slows things down to a droney haze populated by church-like organ, piano stabs and microscopic cymbal work. Eventually, the music devolves into a noisy chaos that makes complete sense given the context of Mike’s vocals. The digital version of this release also includes two more remixes of “What I Have Left,” one by Brian Degraw (Gang Gang Dance) and one by Silk Flowers. It also includes the video for “What I Have Left,” directed by Tara Sinn (www.tara-sinn.com).
